This Week in Room 33! Oct. 23-26
Looking forward to seeing everyone this week at our student-led conferences! (Mon. and Wed.)
We will be heading to the Sheldon this Tuesday to see the Jazz Story. We will leave at 9:00 and return by 11:45.
What to expect this week in 5th grade...
Science- We are continuing our study on Earth's Systems. We are working towards being able to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere interact.
Reading- We will continue to focus on reading complex nonfiction texts as we uncover what makes a main idea complex, strategies for determining implicit main ideas, and using context to determine meaning of vocabulary.
Math- We are diving into chapter 5 this week- adding and subtracting decimals!
Social Studies- We are presenting our Constitution projects this week. Check it out here: Constitution End of Unit Project

This Week in Room 33! Oct. 16-20
This week in 5th grade...
Science- We are continuing our study on Earth's Systems with a focus on the hydrosphere.
Writing- We are working hard on our research reports on our Westward Expansion topic. This week we are organizing our notes, writing flash drafts, and looking back at our notes and ideas for revision.
Reading- We are learning how nonfiction texts are getting more complex as we are moving up in reading levels- the main ideas are implicit and the vocabulary is more difficult. We are learning strategies to overcome these challenges!
Math- We are wrapping up our unit on division. Our ch. 3/4 test will be on Thursday. Please see email for more study resources. Students will work on a study guide in class Tuesday and Wednesday.
Social Studies- We are wrapping up our study on the Constitution with a project.

This Week in Room 33! Oct. 9-13
***Friday is a Half Day- Dismissal is at 11:50. There will be no lunch served!
This week in 5th grade...
Science- We are starting a new unit on Earth's systems (focus on weather and Earth's place in space). We will be working towards being able to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere interact.
Writing- 2nd personal narratives are coming home in students' portfolios. We are beginning a new unit on historical informational (nonfiction) writing! Our first research report will focus on an event from the US Westward Expansion. Students will work within teams to research and take notes before we begin drafting next week.
Reading- As in writing, we are beginning a new unit on reading nonfiction and tackling increasingly complex texts with a focus on determining main ideas. Students are encouraged to continue reading choice books but can also spend their time reading nonfiction texts! Check out our reading tab for more websites with awesome nonfiction articles/videos such as curiosity.com, wonderopolis.org, newsela.com, tweentribune.com, and dogonews.com! As we say often in class... the possibilities are endless! :) There are also links to 3 very famous speeches students can read and discuss at home with families- be sure to check them out!
Math- This week we are interpreting the remainder, determining extra or missing information within problem solving, estimating quotients with 2 digit divisors, and dividing by 2 digit divisors.
Social Studies- We are continuing to study the Constitution, but will also be integrating Social Studies content within our reading/writing units as we research and learn more about the Westward Expansion.

Math Magician Hall of Fame
Half of the students in our class have completed the mixed Math Magician test!! Take a look at the hall of fame!
This Week in Room 33! Oct. 2-6
This week in 5th grade...
Science- We are continuing the engineering design process as groups construct, present, give/receive feedback and revise their prototypes (an arm for the character Ganwar from our read aloud Home of the Brave).
Writing- This week we are using Google docs/drive and Google classroom to publish our 2nd personal narratives. As we publish we will also focus on editing for the correct use of commas and other mechanics. We will celebrate our finished pieces on Thursday with 5th grade and Friday with our 2nd grade buddies!
Reading- As we wrap up our writing unit, we will also be wrapping up our reading unit on interpretation book clubs. This week we will delve deeper into literary analysis. We will celebrate our hard work and participation in book clubs on Friday as we share our most profound thoughts, ideas, and book suggestions! Book clubs will work hard to complete their 2nd book club book this week or into the following week.
Math- We are continuing our unit on division as we divide using patterns, estimate quotients, show our complete understanding of the process through models, distributive property, partial quotients, and the standard long division algorithm.
***It is SO IMPORTANT that students know their basic multiplication and division math facts! It is becoming increasingly difficult for those students who do not know their facts to complete the higher level thinking and problem solving that 5th graders are expected to do. Thank you for taking the extra steps to make sure your 5th grader is working towards mastery of these facts! Math Magician is a great website to practice math facts. Students can also work on their QuickTables in ALEKS.
Social Studies- We are beginning our study on the Constitution.
