Fun day

Today, we had our fun/field day for the year. On this occasion we celebrate the end of the year by playing games indoors and outdoors and getting active. There are only 2 and 1/2 days of school! Don't forget that tomorrow is our 5th grade party at vetta so you don't need to bring anything to school. Wednesday is our dare essay and recognition for 5th grade. Thursday is our last day of school!

What to expect this week in 5th grade:

Math- We are trying some new things in math!
A new website we are trying is www.sumdog.com. Students have an individual username and password and will use concord-elementary as their school code. It is filled with math games and increases difficulty based on each individual's progress. The kids are loving it so far!

We are working on multiplying mixed numbers, dividing fractions, circles, and graphing integers this week. Homework will not be math sheets. Instead, we are "flipping the classroom"! This means students will be viewing a mini-lesson at home by watching a short video. The next day, students will complete the homework with the teacher in small groups. Video links will be posted on our blog for your student each night (tonight's is already posted HERE!)

Social Studies- We are working on a Bill of Rights project with partners. The project will be done in class. Check out the video we watched in class HERE. Our first states and capitals quiz is tomorrow (Tuesday). The final states and capitals quiz is next Tuesday, May 14th. This one will include ALL states/capitals. (LEAP students are given the option to take the 2nd quiz this Friday before they go to Space camp!)

Reading/Writing- We are continuing to work on our poetry portfolios in class. We are also working on our DARE essays. DARE essays are due this Thursday. We will be reading one of my favorite books this week in small groups called Thank You, Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco. We are also reading Hate That Cat by Sharon Creech in class. This book is the sequel to Love That Dog (ask your student about this! We loved it!)

Reminders:

  • Please bring in $2 tomorrow for our pizza party to celebrate all of our hard work on the MAP test!!!
  • Middle school orientation is this Thursday. We will be returning to Concord at 4:00.

Monday Night's Math Video!

We are trying the "flipped classroom" in math this week! Our math homework is to watch a video at home. Tonight's video is on dividing fractions. Students have been told to watch the video twice. Students should try the problem along with the video (on paper or white board) during the 2nd viewing. This should take no more than 5 minutes.
