This Week in Room 33!

Here is what to expect this week in 5th grade:

Math- We are continuing our study of Unit 1: Using Whole Numbers and Decimals. Please make sure we are practicing our multiplication and division facts at home. We will begin using a website called Xtra Math (xtramath.org) in class to show what we know and practice our facts!

Social Studies- We will finish Chapter 1: America's Land on Monday. The chapter test will be on Friday, August 31st. We will complete a study guide and review in class. This week we will also be working on our Free Enterprise Project. Students will give their presentations on Tuesday, September 4th. Students will have class time to complete this but may also work on it at home. Students have the option of video taping their presentation at home and showing the video in class.

Reading- We are continuing to build our stamina and independence with our Daily 5 Read to Self and will begin Work on Writing. This week we will add more strategies to our CAFE board (I will add pictures this week to our blog and Facebook).

Writing- We are continuing to build a community of writers. We will read books by Patricia Polacco and use these as examples of good writing. We will continue to get ideas for writing and practice prewriting techniques.

Please join me this Thursday, August 30th from 6:30-7 for Curriculum Night! Looking forward to seeing you there!

And we're OFF!!!

Wow- what a FANTASTIC first five days of school we have had in room 33! We have been busy learning our classroom routines, beginning our curriculum, and adjusting to the world of 5th grade.

Please visit our Youtube channel and check out our rules videos (the link is on the top left hand side of this blog in the margin). During our first 2 days of school we spent a lot of time discussing appropriate behaviors and what rules we should abide by. We came up with the following 5 rules:

  1. Be Safe
  2. Be Respectful
  3. Be Honest
  4. Be Accepting
  5. Strive for Growth
We also spent a lot of time getting to know each other and practicing some cooperative learning activities at the same time. Ask your child about our "Shuffle 22", "Stand Up, Hand Up, Pair Up", or "Write Around the Room" activities. We have been practicing partner talking, group work, and being a caring community. I really could go on and on- your students have been so attentive and I could not be prouder!

Parents- thank you SO much for completing the parent forms I sent home last Friday. The information you provided me is very helpful and has allowed me get to know your child even more. Thank you for sharing your child with me- I really am so lucky to get to spend this precious time with them.

Please mark your calendars for our Curriculum Night next Thursday, August 30th at 6:30. This time will give me a chance to give you a brief overview of what to expect in 5th grade. I look forward to seeing you there!

Don't forget to post a picture on Flickr!

I hope everyone is enjoying their remaining days of summer!

This is just a reminder for students to upload a photo of themselves from summer onto our Flickr page. This was explained on the postcard I sent out to you. So far, I have LOVED "meeting" Emily R. and Noah by looking at their awesome pictures and reading their captions. If you want to check their pictures click on the following link: Mrs. Schaefer's Flickr Page

If you want to help your student upload a photo follow these steps:

1- Email a photo (either from your smartphone or computer) to met62marry@photos.flickr.com. (I know it is a funny email- when you create an account they automatically assign you an email address. I did not create it.)

2- The subject should be the student's name and the body of the email should be a brief description of the picture or a sentence or 2 introducing yourself.

3- Go to Mrs. Schaefer's Flickr Page to see your picture! :)

Don't forget- Meet the Teacher Night is next Tuesday, August 14th starting at 5:30! You can drop off supplies in our room so your student doesn't have to carry them on the 1st day of school. See you there!

Welcome Back!

Welcome to our class blog and welcome back to school! Postcards were just sent out and I am hoping that you are finding this site with ease.

This blog will be used for weekly updates and will replace any paper copies of weekly newsletters. Please do not hesitate to contact me for any questions in regards to how we will communicate. My email is nschaefer@lindberghschools.ws and once school starts you can contact me by phone at 314-729-2400 x3733. As you all know technology is ever-changing and can be challenging- let me know if I can be of assistance.

You can also find my contact information and teacher website by clicking here: Concord Elementary. Click on Staff Directory on the right side and you will find my name under 5th grade. My website should be available to view very soon and will be another resource for you this year.

I am SO excited to meet you all and begin our year together. Meet the Teacher Night is next Tuesday, August 14th at 5:30. Looking forward to seeing you there!
