This Week in Room 33! 8/28-9/1

***Looking forward to seeing our parents at Curriculum Night this Thursday from 7-7:30 in our classroom!

This week in 5th grade...

Science: This week we are discussing tools that scientists use and participating in activities where students will classify, compare, contrast, and think like scientists!

Reading: This year, 5th graders will be pushed and encouraged to read more than ever before! We are tracking our reading in our trapper keepers and challenging ourselves to finish up to 40 books this school year (we've discussed how this may look different for every reader- we are mostly challenging ourselves to read more books this year than any other year!) This is a BIG challenge and we ARE up for it! We've already had multiple students finish a book! This week we will use our reader's notebooks to help us push the level of our reading and thinking.

Writing: This week we will continue our first writing unit on personal narratives! You can find our 5th grade writing checklists in the writing page for more information on what we are learning when it comes to narrative writing.

Math: We are so excited to continue our first unit on place value this week. Students will be working in collaborative math stations, ALEKS (our individualized online program), and small group instruction within our math workshop. Students will be asked to work on ALEKS for at least 20 minutes at home each week. Students will also begin completing their homework this week using Google classroom.

Social Studies: We will spend this time continuing to build our classroom community. We will refresh our memories on the American Revolution at the end of this week and officially begin next week with our study of the Declaration of Independence. We are looking forward to using our new Social Studies textbook and online resources!

*Be sure to check out the blog posts below. Our social media leaders will be posting updates throughout each week and they are already doing a fantastic job! If you like us on Facebook, you will get updated each time there is a new post.

*Don't forget to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter! Social Media is a fantastic and easy way to connect with families and share what is happening in our classroom as well as other resources for you at home!

This Week in Room 33! Aug. 21-25

Happy 1st full week of school! I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend and had wonderful things to say about their first 2 days of school last week. I cannot wait to continue getting to know everyone- we have such as AWESOME class of 5th grade leaders!

*Parents- If you have not already done so, please fill out THIS SURVEY. I am LOVING the responses so far and am so thankful that you are taking the time to complete this for me!

As a reminder, at Lindbergh students are allowed to bring in their own devices to school (i.e.- kindles, iPads, tablets, etc.) and use for educational purposes during the school day. We love using technology in our classroom and the more devices, the better! Make sure your student knows how to download apps- the apps we use most in our classroom are listed under the parents tab (or click HERE).

***We cannot wait to share the solar eclipse experience on Monday!
  • ALL RECESS will be inside from 11-3
  • Start time of total eclipse 1:17 and 15 seconds
  • End time of total eclipse 1:19:00
  • Glasses are only off during the total eclipse (horn will sound to take them off and put them on)
  • Students will have an assembly to talk about safety and practice when/how to remove glasses
  • Students may opt out and go to the library and watch it streamed via NASA.  Please notify classroom teachers ASAP if you have not already.
  • Parent volunteers please arrive to school at 12:30 unless your classroom teachers have shared otherwise.
  • If your child is in part-time kindergarten, he/she will be transitioning to or from school during the partial solar eclipse. As you escort your child to or from the bus, please have them refrain looking into the sky.

Here's what else to expect this week in 5th grade:
Science- We will begin the set up of our science notebooks and learn important terms and tools that we will be using in science investigations and activities this year!

Writing- We will introduce our writer's workshop this week and begin using our writer's notebooks! We will be doing a lot of writing this year and this week's focus will be on beginning to build our writing stamina. We will also begin our first unit on personal narratives.

Reading- We will be discussing how our reading workshop runs and begin our "Read to Self" training! We will explore what read to self looks like and will begin building our stamina so we can read for long periods of time. The absolute BEST way to become a better reader and to learn to enjoy reading is to dive in and READ! We will be discussing how to choose good fit books as well as the importance of REAL reading (THINKING while reading) vs. FAKE reading (reading the words without thinking of the text's meaning). We will also begin our first unit of study on analyzing themes with a focus on writing about our reading in our reader's notebooks.

This 1st week I encourage that you help your child build his/her reading stamina at home just like we will be building our stamina in school (we will start with 5 and work our way up to 20 minutes). Students are responsible for reading the same book at home that they are reading at school. This will help students to focus on one book at a time and maintain our goal of reading more books this year than ever before!

Math- We will be learning how our math workshop runs and begin to explore our math stations.  We will begin our first chapter on place value.

***Students will need a computer or device with Internet access for their nightly math homework. They will either log in to their Google account (we are writing our log-in information in planners this week) to access their homework through the Google classroom or they can use the Google classroom app. Students will show their work in their math notebooks and be encouraged to bring home their math textbooks for extra help and also extra practice if you feel it is necessary.

Social Studies- We will begin Social Studies next week as we will use this time to continue building our classroom community and learning how our classroom runs.

Homework- Homework will be posted under the Daily Homework page on this blog (top tab). It is important to help your child find a good time and place to complete reading and homework each night. Thank you for all of your support at HOME! :)

It was so nice to meet everyone at Meet the Teacher! It's going to be the BEST year!

***Students--- I can't wait to get to know you! Let's start with sharing some summer pictures! Please follow these (easy, I promise!) steps:

1- Email the picture to met62marry@photos.flickr.com. Include your name as the subject and write about your picture in the body of the email along with your picture.
(Parents- If you have a signature on your email, you may want to delete it so it doesn't show up on the Flickr page as part of the picture's caption.)

2- Go to https://www.flickr.com/photos/mrsschaefer/ to view everyone's pictures and captions! The link to our Flickr page is also on the right side of this blog with this icon---
