I am so sorry this update is a little late- we have been BUSY, BUSY! :)

What to expect this week in 5th grade:

Concord's learning strategy for this week pertains to math! Check it out:

Science- We are continuing our study of space, specifically the inner and outer planets! Ask your student if they can name the planets in order. Can they give you characteristics of each planet?

Reading- We are focusing on a multitude of reading strategies and skills including main idea, compare/contrast, cause/effect, and problem/solution. We are busy working in guided reading groups, independent activities, and literature circles. Their Edmodo questions/comments for their lit. circles are due Thursday. Please engage your student in a conversation about their books!

Writing- We are busy revising, editing, and publishing our 2nd memoir! We will celebrate our memoirs on Friday!

Happy Valentine's Day!

This Week in Room 33! 2/18-21

What to expect this week in 5th grade:

Math- We are finishing up our unit on measurement! We will be reviewing Wed. and Thurs. and our test will be on Friday. Students can study using the online textbook, their textbook at home, and homework sheets in binder! Students should be able to complete measurement conversions, add and subtract measurements, find the elapsed time, and find the perimeter and area of polygons.

Science- WOW! I am SO proud of everyone's PRISM projects! PRISM night is this Thursday. Be sure to come and check out everyone's hard work! We will be working on our space unit in class- specifically, the phases of the moon.

Reading- We will be focused on using close reading strategies and using context clues and word parts to understand vocabulary. As a reminder, students should be reading at least 20 minutes every night! I find this picture to be very powerful in showing us why it is so important to be reading each and every night! Literature circle questions/comments on edmodo are due Thursday.

Writing- We will be flash drafting our 2nd memoir and revising this week! Ask your student what they are writing about in this memoir AND how are they structuring it?

Reminders:
Thursday- PRISM night
Friday- Spring Pictures
Friday- Six Flags reading sheets due (optional)
2/28- Middle School forms due
2/28- Science Center Field Trip

This Week in Room 33! 2/10-14

What to expect this week in 5th grade:

Math- We are working on our measurement unit and will focus on elapsed time, temperature, finding the perimeter of polygons, and finding the unknown side of a figure. Review assignment #5 is due Friday.

Science- PRISM boards are due Friday! If your student's board is done early, they are more than welcome to bring them in before Friday! We will continue with our new unit on space.

Reading- We will focus on the strategy of close reading. This is a fantastic strategy for reading complex texts and will allow us to dig deeper into our understanding of a text. Literature circles are on Thursday. Ask your student to see their edmodo account and see how they are doing with their questions and comments!

Writing- We will be revising and editing our first memoir this week and begin thinking about writing our 2nd! Our spelling test and words contract due date is this Friday. If students are ready, they may take their spelling test on Thursday.

This Week in Room 33! 2/3-7

Happy February! Can you believe how FAST January went?! We have a busy week ahead- here's what to expect:

Math- We are working on our new unit of measurement! We are working on changing linear units, customary capacity and weight, metric capacity and mass, and elapsed time. Ask your student about the metric measurement song AND motions! :) Assignment #4 is due Friday.

Science- We are wrapping up our plants and animals units by sharing our animal Power Points- so far I am VERY impressed with our presenters! We will begin our study on Earth and Space this week. Our last PRISM check is this Friday. I will be checking conclusions in their PRISM notebooks. There are plenty of examples in their science notebooks- students know that their conclusion should have 5 parts! PRISM boards are DUE next Friday, 2/14. I cannot wait to see the hallway FILLED with PRISM boards! I could not be prouder of all the work and effort your students have put into these projects! PRISM night is Thursday, Feb. 20th.

Reading- We will begin to focus on the strategy of close reading.  We will discuss the importance of repeated readings in order to "dig deeper" in to a text's meaning. Literature circles are due Thursday. Ask your student to show you their edmodo account and check their 3 thick questions and 2 comments that are due each week. Also, ask your student what he/she is learning about their historical time period from their historical fiction novel- these could be GREAT discussions!

Writing- I am LOVING our unit on memoirs- your kids are proving to be COURAGEOUS writers! It takes courage to write about yourself and to reflect on your emotions and life experiences- I am so proud of our writers! We are learning about adding depth to our writing, studying and planning structures, drafting, revising, and editing this week. Students are receiving new words this week- spelling test and contract due date is Fri. 2/14.
