This Week in Room 33! Jan. 1/27-31

I am SO excited to have a full 5-day week- we will be BUSY! :)

What to expect this week in 5th grade:

Math- Our fractions test will be on Wednesday, 1/29. We will review in class on Mon. and Tue. Students can study using the online textbook, homework sheets in binder, and math notebook. On Thursday we will begin our unit on measurement! Review assignment #3 is due Friday. I forgot to hand this out last Friday, so they will be getting it on Monday. It is the student's responsibility to bring me any assignments they have fixed or needed signed!

Science- We will be busy this week finishing our animal Power Point presentations. Also, we have our plants and animals test on Friday, 1/31. Study guides are in binders. Students can study using their notebooks! I will put up Quizlet flashcards on the blog this week! We will review in class on Wed. PRISM check #4 is this Friday. Students must have their data chart and graph completed. In the meantime, students can also be working on their PRISM boards. There is an example in the Science link (at top of blog). I am SO excited to see the finished products! :)

Reading- With a full 5-day week ahead of us, I am looking forward to consistently meeting with small, guided reading groups! We will be reading/discussing articles from our StoryWorks magazine. Literature circles will meet on Thursday. Students should have their reading assignment completed along with their 3 THICK questions and 2 comments (replies to other student questions) on edmodo.com. I encourage you to talk to your student about their historical fiction book they are reading- we've got some AWESOME books we are reading that could spark conversations about different time periods!

Writing- We will continue our study of memoirs by writing small about big topics, reading literature for inspiration, choosing a seed idea, adding depth to our writing, and planning structures.

Example of PRISM board!

This is only an example- it is NOT exemplar- I look forward to seeing much more creative boards!!! 😊

Math Homework!

Please solve this problem using the strategy "work backwards". Bring in your work/answer on Monday!

On Friday, Michael's plant was 5/6 foot tall. It had grown 1/3 foot from Wednesday to Friday. It had grown 3/8 foot from Monday to Wednesday. How tall was Michael's plant on Monday?

Memoirs today!

Today we wrote seed ideas and themes for memoirs. I did Saying Goodbye and Saying Hello. Also have a good weekend, but don't forget to do PRISM!

This Week in Room 33! Jan. 22-24

Here's what to expect during this short week:

Math- We will be working on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators and solving problems using the strategy "work backwards". This will complete our fractions unit. We will review on Mon. and Tue. of next week and our test will be on Wed. 1/29

As a reminder, students are responsible for completing the math review assignment each week. **These will be handed out each Friday and will be due the following Friday. These review assignments ARE graded each week and will be a part of their math grade. These assignments are EXTREMELY beneficial as we prepare for our comprehensive MAP test! When students receive a 69 or below, they are required to fix it and get it signed. If students receive a 79 or below they have a CHOICE to fix it. When fixed, I will average the old with the new grade. I cannot give out a grade higher than an 80 after it is fixed.

Science- Students will be given time this week to work on their animal Power Point project. We will be using the google drive and students will share their Power Points next week. This is NOT something students need to complete at home- that time should be reserved for PRISM!

*Our plants and animals test will be next Friday, 1/31. Study guides are going home Wed. Students should rely on their science notes to study!

*Prism check #3 is this Friday. Students must have their variables (constants, independent, dependent) in their notebooks. Students should also be bringing in $3 sometime this week to cover the cost of their PRISM boxes. PRISM boxes will be brought home this week and need to be completed at home. Experiments need to be completed at home by next Friday, 1/31 for PRISM check #4 along with the data showed in a chart and a graph. This is all outlined on your student's PRISM timeline.

Reading- This week we will continue discussing predictions vs. inferences and characteristics of historical fiction with the mentor text Star of Fear, Star of Hope. Literature circles will now meet on Thursday because of the snow day. Students are expected to read the required pages and then post 3 thick questions on edmodo.com and comment on 2 other questions.

Writing- We are starting our new unit on MEMOIRS! We will be discussing what a memoir is, interpreting important stories of our lives, and writing small about big moments.

Have a WONDERFUL week! :)

This Week in Room 33! Jan 13-17

Welcome back!!! It was SO NICE to FINALLY see students on Friday! It was a challenge for everyone (including me!) to get back into the swing of things with our extended break! This week will be busy, busy!

What to expect this week in 5th grade:

Math- It's time for FRACTIONS! We started on Friday and will continue this week. We will be working on mixed numbers, comparing/ordering fractions, and relating fractions with decimals. When there is a video for homework, students are expected to watch it and solve the problems at the end to be checked the next day in class. You may also want your student to show you/review the math sheet from that day (located in their binders!)

**Students received their first 25 question review assignment on Friday. These will be handed out each Friday and will be due the following Friday. These review assignments ARE graded each week and will be a part of their math grade. These assignments are EXTREMELY beneficial as we prepare for our comprehensive MAP test!

Science- I'm hoping your student has been busy at home preparing for their first PRISM checks! PRISM checks are located on the timeline sheet your student has in their binders. Because of the snow days last week, PRISM check #1 (research report, bibliography, hypothesis) will be on Wed., 1/15 and PRISM check #2 (materials and procedures) will be on Fri. 1/17. We should then be back on track. Students are to complete each part in their PRISM notebooks. Please help guide your student in this process- it can be quite overwhelming especially for students who have never done PRISM, however, it is VERY rewarding to see your student's finished product!

Aside from PRISM, students are working with partners on an animal classification project using PowerPoint. Each pair is researching animals from a specific continent.

Reading- We are beginning new literature circles in which groups will be reading a historical fiction book! This week we will discuss characteristics of historical fiction, predictions vs. inferences, and read a mentor text titled Star of Fear, Star of Hope by Jo Hoestlandt.

Writing- In preparation for our next unit, we will have a "Grammar Boot Camp"! Recruits will be assigned tasks to be completed in their notebooks. Tasks include: quotation marks, transition words, avoiding run on sentences, proper nouns, and commas. As a reminder, students are expected to be writing each night for at least 10 min. in their writer's notebook!

Other Reminders:
  • This Tuesday we will have a field trip to the Sheldon Theater! We will be leaving school in the morning and will be back for block at 11:30.
  • This Wednesday is Early Release!
  • We are starting DARE this week. It will be every Thursday from 2-2:45.
  • No School Mon. 1/20
***As a reminder, I post homework assignments and other school-related events on our google calendar. Click HERE or at the Class Calendar link at the top of the blog.

Math Video on Mixed Numbers!

Please don't forget to solve the last 2 problems on a separate sheet of paper and bring in on Monday! Enjoy your weekend! :)
