This Week in Room 33! May 12-15

What to expect this week in 5th grade:

Math- We are learning how to multiply and divide fractions!

Science- Our simple machines test is Tuesday. Check out the science page (tab at top of blog) for 3 presentations you can view to help study! We will be starting our compound machine project at the end of the week. 

Social Studies- Keep on studying your states and capitals! 

Reading- Literature circles will meet this Thursday. We will be reading poetry and discussing how poetry can help with our fluency. Check out  Giggle Poetry Website

Writing- We are beginning our poetry unit! Each student has chosen a theme or topic for their own personal anthology! An anthology is a collection of related poems. Poetry is so much FUN because of its creativity and endless boundaries- I cannot wait to continue exploring poetry with this class!

This Week in Room 33! 5/5-5/9

Happy Monday! We have made it to our last week of MAP testing! We will be finishing up the Science MAP test today and tomorrow. Here's what else to expect this week in 5th grade:

Math- We will begin a new unit of lessons to get us ready for 6th grade! We will be learning about prime factorization, exponents, and multiplying fractions. I am so excited for us to build upon all that we know and learn new things!

Science- We will be setting up and conducting an investigation on friction! We will have our simple machines test on Tuesday, 5/13. Study guides went home last week and are in students' binders.

Social Studies- The 1st states/capitals quiz will be on Wednesday. Students are responsible for only the states highlighted for this first quiz!

Reading- Literature circles will meet Friday. Students are responsible for reading their assigned pages in order to participate in their group discussions. We will also be integrating our fantasy and poetry writing units into our reading lessons!

Writing- I will be collecting DARE essays on Wednesday. We are wrapping up our fantasy mini-unit this week and starting our poetry unit! We will be revising, editing, and publishing our fantasy stories. Our fantasy books will be due Thursday for our "story hour" celebration with our buddies!
