This Week in Room 33! Oct. 19-23

This week in 5th grade...

Science- This week we are focusing on what causes weather and what tools scientists use to collect weather data. Some important words we are learning this week include- meteorologist, barometric pressure, atmosphere, anemometer, weather vane, temperature, humidity, and hygrometer.

Writing- We are beginning a new unit on historical informational (nonfiction) writing!  Our first research report will focus on the Native American tribe each student has chosen for their social studies project. Students will research, take notes, and begin to draft this week. 

Reading- As in writing, we are beginning a new unit on reading nonfiction and tackling increasingly complex texts with a focus on determining main ideas. Students are encouraged to continue reading choice books but can also spend their time reading nonfiction texts! Check out our reading tab for more websites with awesome nonfiction articles/videos such as curiosity.com, wonderopolis.org, newsela.com, tweentribune.com, and dogonews.com! As we say often in class... the possibilities are endless! :) There are also links to 3 very famous speeches students can read and discuss at home with families- be sure to check them out!

Math- This week we are interpreting the remainder and determining extra or missing information within problem solving, estimating and dividing by 2-digit divisors.

Social Studies- We will be working on our Google slides presentations for our Native American projects this week. Students should be working on their models at home. The project is due Thurs., Oct. 29!

Fri. 10/23 iDiscover- 5th Grade Grandparents are invited for a tour of our school from 10:30-11:30.  5th graders will share several of our new learning spaces at Concord along with some of our cool technology tools such as iMovie, snap circuits and Legos.

Thurs. 10/29- Pumpkin Run & Halloween Party!

This Week in Room 33! Oct. 12-16

This week in 5th grade...

Science- This week we are learning that the ocean is a major reservoir in Earth's water cycle. Students are engaged in science stations as they learn the material through technology (online textbook and mycapstonelibrary.com), guided reading lessons with the teacher, and other hands-on projects. By the end of each cycle, students are expected to show their learning and understanding of the material with a lesson check.

Writing- We are completing our narrative unit with a guided performance task. Students will navigate multiple sources including a video, map, and brochure on the Lincoln memorial and other monuments in Washington D.C. They will take notes, answer research questions and ultimately write an essay that incorporates their understanding of narrative writing AND the sources. 

Reading- This week we are finishing our read aloud book Home of the Brave, continuing to delve into literary analysis, and applying all of our interpretive thinking into guided reading lessons with the teacher. As a reminder, students should be reading the same book at home that they are reading in school. I couldn't be more impressed with this group of readers- as a class we have already read over 130 books!!!

Math- We are continuing our unit on division as we show our complete understanding of the process through models, distributive property, partial quotients, and the standard long division algorithm. 

***It is SO IMPORTANT that students know their basic multiplication and division math facts! It is becoming increasingly difficult for those students who do not know their facts to complete the higher level thinking and problem solving that 5th graders are expected to do. Thank you for taking the extra steps to make sure your 5th grader is working towards mastery of these facts!  Math Magician is a great website to practice math facts. Students can also work on their QuickTables in ALEKS.

Social Studies- This week we are studying different Native American cultures within regions- peoples of the Northwest, Southwest, Plains, and East. Students will be working on a Native American project in which they will choose a tribe, create a Google slideshow, and construct a model to be put on display in our library. Celebrating our Writing and Reading!

Be on the look out- students are bringing home their writing portfolios to celebrate their personal narratives with families! Many students noticed that what they wanted to improve on from their 1st personal narrative is what they are most proud of in their 2nd narrative- WOW! :) Check out the following pictures from our day & don't miss the videos on our Twitter page!

This Week in Room 33! Oct. 5-9

Check out the above video called the "Power of Yet". We will be watching and discussing this during our morning meetings. As we focus on a growth mindset and we track our own data in our goal setting section of our leader binder, it is important to remember that the only way we achieve our goals is through hard work and perseverance! We can do it! 

This week in 5th grade...

Science- We will be tracking weather data in our notebooks each day using weather.com. We are also starting our first set of science stations for lesson 1 on the water cycle. We should be able to answer the question-- How does water move through the environment? 

Writing- This week we are using the Google drive and Google classroom to publish our personal narratives. As we publish we will also focus on editing for the correct use of commas and other mechanics. We will celebrate our finished pieces on Friday!

Reading- As we wrap up our writing unit, we will also be wrapping up our reading unit on interpretation book clubs. This week we will compare characters' connections to a theme, study the choices an author did not make to better understand the ones they did, and delve deeper into literary analysis. We will celebrate our hard work and participation in book clubs on Friday as we share our most profound thoughts, ideas, and book suggestions!

Math- This week we will begin our study on division! We will relate division to multiplication through fact families, divide with and without remainders, divide mentally using patterns with powers of 10, and estimate quotients. Keep practicing those math facts at home- it makes a WORLD of a difference when students know their facts quickly!

Social Studies- We are studying the ancient Paleo-Indians and beginning to discuss other native american cultures. Within our stations we have been using the website mycapstonelibrary.com. Students are choosing from the following books to read/listen to--
